How Wrong Was I?: Steve's Journey at Function Fitness

“I Didn't Think It Would Be for Me”

We'll be honest. Not everyone walks into Function Fitness bursting with excitement at the thought of working out.

Steve certainly didn't.

Back in 2024, his cholesterol was high, his blood pressure was even higher, and he knew it was time to start taking better care of himself.

His partner, Emma, suggested Function Fitness.

Was he convinced? Not particularly.

Did he expect to discover a love of the gym? Not exactly.

But he decided to give it a go anyway. And looking back, he's got a pretty good way of summing up how that decision turned out.

“How wrong was I.”

We love a bit of hindsight, Steve!

From Keeping Himself to Himself to Feeling at Home

When Steve first joined, he was shy. He mostly kept himself to himself, and walking into a gym full of people wasn't necessarily something he'd have chosen to do for fun.

Fast-forward to now, and things look rather different.

The workouts became part of his routine. The faces became familiar. The conversations started happening. Somewhere along the way, the place he wasn't sure would be for him became somewhere he genuinely enjoys being.

His own words say it better than we could:

“I just feel at home when I'm at the gym.”

And that's one of the things we love most about Steve's journey. He joined because he knew he needed to do something about his health. He wasn't looking for a new social circle or a place to spend his time.

But along with the improvements to his health, he's found a community where he feels comfortable, has made friends and can enjoy being part of something.

That's a pretty good bonus!

Cholesterol Down. Blood Pressure Down. First Pull-Up Done.

Let's talk about the progress, because there's plenty to celebrate.

Steve's cholesterol is now back within a healthy range, and his blood pressure has dropped significantly. He's stronger, too, and much more conscious of looking after himself.

Then there's his first pull-up.

If you've ever worked towards a movement that once seemed completely out of reach, you'll know the feeling when you finally get there. That “I actually did that!” moment makes all the effort worthwhile.

It's another achievement Steve can be proud of, and a reminder of just how much can change when you keep showing up.

He's also taken part in the Intra-House Games, with all the team spirit, encouragement and cheering that comes with them. It's a chance for members to get involved, challenge themselves and enjoy a bit of friendly competition together.

Although, according to Steve, his team should have won.

We'll let him have his say on that one! 😂

Learning to Play the Long Game

Of course, progress doesn't always go in a straight line.

Steve has picked up a few injuries along the way, which have taught him the importance of knowing when to push on and when to take a step back.

When you're keen to keep progressing, slowing down can be frustrating. But learning to listen to your body, allowing yourself time to recover and coming back when you're ready are all part of looking after yourself.

It's not about smashing every session or pushing through at all costs. It's about finding a way to keep moving, getting stronger and building habits you can stick with for the long term.

And that's exactly what Steve wants to keep doing.

Nothing Fancy. Just Keep Going.

Ask Steve what he's working towards now, and you're not going to get a twelve-page fitness strategy!

He wants to stay healthy, stay strong, build a bit more muscle, avoid injuries and keep moving.

Oh, and stay alive.

Straight to the point, Steve!

There's something refreshing about knowing what matters to you and keeping it simple. Steve doesn't need an elaborate plan or some huge fitness goal. He wants to look after himself, enjoy life and keep doing the things that matter to him.

And after everything he's achieved so far, that's a goal well worth working towards.

So, How Wrong Was He?

Steve didn't join Function Fitness because he'd always dreamed of being a gym person.

He joined because his health gave him a reason to make a change. He wasn't convinced it would work for him, and he had no idea just how much he would get out of it.

Since then, his health has improved, he's achieved things he might never have expected, and he's found a place where he feels at home.

Steve, we're so glad you decided to give Function Fitness a go. You might not have been convinced at the beginning, but look at you now!

Your health has improved, you've achieved things you might never have expected, and you've found a place where you feel at home.

We're incredibly proud of how far you've come. 🧡
