If you've ever trained alongside Alice at Function Fitness, you’ll know exactly who I mean. Always smiling, always turning up (usually in green leggings), and now proudly brace-free with those very nice teeth! But Alice’s journey didn’t start in the weights room, it started years ago in a spin class during the Lou-era, long before I took over Function Fitness with Ceri.
When we stepped into ownership, Alice made the decision to take the leap into classes and go through our Fundamentals. She admitted she was nervous.
“I was worried I wouldn’t keep up or that I’d look silly.”
But here’s what I’ve learned about Alice, she always shows up, even when she doubts herself. And that’s exactly what she did.
We started 1:1 personal training together, and I still remember her saying,
“I don’t think I’ll ever be able to press that barbell overhead.”
But we chipped away at it and not long after, she did exactly that.
Week by week, her confidence grew. She stopped comparing herself to anyone else and started lifting for herself.
“I’ve learned that my strength doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s. It’s mine.”
And it’s shifts just like that that change everything.
These days, Alice trains alongside her brilliant training partner Sandie. The two of them are coached by Steve, who’s helped them both stay consistent, injury-free, and continually progressing.
It hasn’t all been plain sailing, there have been niggles and injuries along the way but what’s changed most is Alice’s mindset.
“Before, if I hurt something, I’d just stop going. Now I know there’s always something I can do, someone to help adapt and keep me moving.”
Alice often says she loves the buzz at Function Fitness. The banter, the laughter, the friendships.
“I come for the people as much as the training,”
And I think that says everything about what we’ve built here.
If you’re someone who feels unsure like you need to “get fitter” before starting I want you to know this: you don’t. We meet you where you are. Just like we did with Alice.
