More Than She Thought Possible: Hannah’s Journey at Function Fitness

“I’d Never Even Been Inside a Gym”

Before joining Function Fitness, Hannah had never stepped foot in a gym.

And honestly, she never really thought she would.

She worried about being judged, didn’t know how to use equipment, and felt convinced she wasn’t fit or strong enough to belong in that kind of environment.

Then life threw something else into the mix.

After breaking her ankle and discovering she had low bone density, Hannah found herself stuck in a cycle that will probably feel familiar to a lot of people:

The less she did physically, the less she wanted to do mentally too.

Or, as she puts it:

“Thanks to the joys of perimenopause… apparently I’m now a woman of that age!!”

Somewhere between recovery, rebuilding confidence, and trying to negotiate with knees that occasionally seem to have their own opinions, she decided something needed to change.

Starting Before She Felt Ready

When Hannah first joined, her goals were simple.

Get stronger. Build confidence. Improve fitness. Lose weight. Learn how to actually move properly.

At first, even being in the gym environment felt unfamiliar. The movements, the equipment, the techniques. It was all new.

But she kept turning up anyway.

And slowly, things that once felt intimidating started feeling manageable.

Then enjoyable.

And that shift surprised her more than anything.

Realising She Could Actually Do This

One of the biggest changes for Hannah was realising she was capable of more than she gave herself credit for.

The coaching, support, and structure gave her confidence to keep improving, even on the days where her brain and body did not seem fully aligned.

“Honestly my brain is telling my knees one thing, but they clearly do not listen!”

But despite that, progress kept happening.

Not perfectly. Not all at once. But enough for her to start noticing something important:

She could do this.

The Wins That Matter Most

Hannah is the first person to tell you she may never be “the strongest or the fastest”.

But that is not really what matters anymore.

Because she is now loading bars and lifting weights she never imagined she would be capable of lifting.

And she is still improving.

But the moments that stay with her most are the ones shared with other people.

“When I got my first double under, the whole class celebrated.”

Anyone who has spent time battling double unders knows the skipping rope probably deserved its own celebration too.

But that moment says a lot about what Function Fitness became for Hannah.

Not just somewhere to train.

Somewhere she felt supported. Encouraged. Part of something.

More Than Physical Progress

One of the biggest changes has actually been mental.

The three-month goal reviews and body scans helped Hannah realise her hard work was genuinely paying off, especially on the days where progress felt slower in her own head.

And somewhere along the way, the gym stopped feeling like a place she did not belong.

It became part of her routine. Part of her confidence. Part of her life.

What Comes Next

Hannah’s goals now are simple:

Stay consistent. Keep building strength. Keep improving technique.

No huge dramatic finish line.

Just continuing to get better, little by little.

And probably continuing negotiations with her knees along the way.

To Anyone Thinking About Joining

“If you’re like me, and you have the motivation to make a change but struggle to work out on your own, this is exactly where you need to be.”

For Hannah, the biggest surprise was discovering there was no judgement here.

Just support, encouragement, and a genuinely friendly community full of people all figuring things out together.

And for someone who once never imagined herself in a gym at all, that shift means everything.

More Than She Thought Possible

Hannah joined Function Fitness hoping to feel healthier and stronger.

What she did not expect was to completely change how she saw herself.

This was someone who had never stepped foot in a gym before. Someone who genuinely believed those environments were for fitter people, stronger people, more confident people.

Other people.

Now she is loading barbells, celebrating double unders with her class behind her, and walking into a gym that no longer feels intimidating or unfamiliar.

It feels like somewhere she belongs.

And that might be the biggest transformation of all.

We’re so proud of you, Hannah 🧡
