What Would You Give for 12 More Years of Health? The Shocking Truth About Our Final Decade and How to Change It

Introduction

If you could add 12 healthy years to your life, would you DO it? I recently sat in on a talk by the power house that is Jen Pishko (Instagram link). Total transparency, I was actually waiting for the following speaker. I was absolutely blown away by her stage presence and how passionate she was for creating healthy people. She posed a powerful question: If our health system is working then why as a population are we getting more sick? I hope this hits home for you as well, you might have a family member that popped to the back of your mind, or might be frustrated by an injury that has you questioning your fitness. Hopefully by reading this you’ll be able to overcome your current challenge.

If you read my last blog, you’ll be familiar with our F.I.T.A values- Fun, Integrity, Teaching, and Ambition. This is our commitment for moving away from a “sickness mindset” and creating a “health mindset”. At Function Fitness, proactive health isn’t just a goal; it’s the foundation of everything we do. Together, we’ll help you build a future where fitness and health aren’t just for today, but for life.

The Problem: Health is Declining, But We Can Change That

The problem is that many of us sit behind our health issues until they feel overwhelmed, waiting for a quick fix or the “winning ticket” to solve it all. But this wait only allows our health to deteriorate further, impacting our mobility, strength, and overall quality of life. We start to face the tough question: “Is it too late to turn things around?”

In today’s world, lifestyle diseases—like heart disease, diabetes, and obesity—are more common than ever. Inactivity, poor diet, and chronic stress contribute to conditions that not only affect how we live but also how long we live. Unfortunately, traditional healthcare often focuses on treating symptoms only after problems arise, rather than helping us prevent them in the first place. This reactive approach leaves many people spending their final years managing multiple chronic conditions, limiting their ability to enjoy a full, vibrant life.

At Function Fitness, we believe it’s time to break this cycle. By addressing health proactively, we empower our members to build resilience and wellness now, so they can live healthier and happier well into the future.

Conclusion

Let’s circle back to the initial question: If you could add 12 healthy years to your life, would you do it? This is why I felt compelled to write about this topic. During the talk, Jenn Pishko highlighted that, on average, people spend the last 12 years of their lives in poor health. But here’s the truth—you can change that. Starting this journey now can make those years not only healthier but far more fulfilling.
