From Injury to Inner Strength: Sophie’s Function Fitness Journey

When Sophie joined Function Fitness in February 2024, it was thanks to a lucky win—a free 6-week challenge. But what began as a timely opportunity to recover from a meniscus injury quickly became something far more meaningful.

“I felt so privileged.. It came at the right time.”

She was excited to see how the gym operated and ready to begin her recovery journey, though life—as always—wasn’t about to slow down to make it easy.

Juggling Life While Reclaiming Her Health

With children, work, a social calendar, a household, and even a business to run, Sophie is no stranger to spinning plates. During her 6-week challenge, she committed to three sessions a week, and for a while, it felt like she was in her groove.

“I was focused on my goal!"

But maintaining that consistency hasn’t always been simple.

“I still juggle everything… though I’m feeling I’m going backwards. I’m really trying, just not seeing any quick gains.”

That honesty is what makes Sophie’s journey so relatable. Because, for many, the path to progress isn’t a straight line—it’s a climb with peaks, dips, and everything in between.

A Space to Be Herself

What’s kept her coming back, even when life’s thrown curveballs, is the support she’s found at Function Fitness. She explains...

“The coaches are super supportive and understanding."
“The set sessions mean you don’t feel like you’re working out alone. It’s a safe space where I can feel comfortable to be myself and enjoy something I didn’t think was my thing—which now I absolutely love.”

And that enjoyment is amplified by the people around her. Sophie shares...

“I feel so privileged in knowing such kind-hearted people with similar interests to me. Even if the workout of the day is a killer, every session is made fun because of the people I’m with.”

Strength Beyond the Physical

Sophie doesn’t just battle the physical demands of exercise. She also faces internal challenges with remarkable courage. Living with ADHD traits, she describes how her mind works a little differently.

“The constant battle in my head, the questioning of being good enough… once I’m told it’s not good enough, I always focus on the negative instead of believing in the strength and positive stuff I’ve done prior.”

But despite those moments of self-doubt, Sophie continues to show up. And that, in itself, is a huge win.

One of her most meaningful moments? Participating in the Games, surrounded by others smashing their goals.

“It was such an inspirational moment for me.”

Goals That Come From the Heart

Sophie’s goals aren’t just about fitness—they’re deeply rooted in her values and her family. On May 17th, she’ll walk a 10-mile Night Walk in inflatable costumes with some of her Function Fitness friends in support of the North Devon Hospice, a cause close to her heart.

Her bigger picture?

“To be healthier for my children, providing them with a happy and fun mummy… and to be inspirational to my children and make them and my other half proud.”

She also hopes to feel more confident in her own skin -

“To feel nicer within my clothes!"

But it’s clear her motivation runs deeper than appearance.

“Smash Your Own Goals Out the Park”

For anyone thinking about joining Function Fitness, Sophie has a simple message:

“Joining a gym can be an intimidating situation, but no matter where you are on your fitness journey, Function Fitness will make you feel as though you're part of the family.”

And her advice?

“Focus on yourself and your feelings after you've completed the workout. Soak in the support of others championing you for the small wins as well as the big ones. And smash your own goals out the park.”

Sophie’s journey reminds us that strength isn’t just measured in kilos lifted or miles run—it’s in showing up, in finding your people, and in pushing forward even when your mind tells you otherwise.
