At Function Fitness, we pride ourselves on building a strong community, and one of the best parts of running this gym is watching our members grow and achieve things they never thought possible. Today, we want to highlight Sarah, one of our long-term members who started her journey with us over 11 years ago.
When Sarah first joined, she wasn’t someone who enjoyed working out. In fact, like many of us, she had always tried to avoid PE lessons in school. But Sarah’s story is a testament to how much can change when you find the right support and environment. Here’s her inspiring journey, in her own words.
"I started Function Fitness over 11 years ago, back when Lou was running the gym. I joined a couple of bootcamps, and honestly, they were so tough! I had never been the type of person who enjoyed working out – in school, I’d do anything to get out of PE lessons.
But that has all changed now. I absolutely love going to the gym and being part of the Function Fitness family. It might sound strange to call it a ‘family,’ but that’s truly what it feels like. Charlie and the team have built something really special here. It’s like no other gym. Every coach and every member celebrates your success with you. The classes are fun, and we all get through the workouts together.
Joining a gym can feel intimidating, but this place is so different. It’s not just a gym – it’s a community, and I’m so grateful to be a part of it.
When I first started, my goal was to get fitter and lose weight, and I managed to achieve those goals with the incredible support from the coaches. During my time at Function Fitness, I’ve had two children, and there have been times when it felt like I was starting over again. But now, I can honestly say I’m stronger and fitter than I’ve ever been. I also love that I can walk into the gym in a bad mood and leave feeling positive and energised – every single time.
At the moment, I do nine sessions a month, and I have a personal training session with Steve once a week. Our focus has been on weightlifting, and over the last six months, with Steve’s coaching, I’ve smashed my strength goals. It feels amazing to see what I’m capable of!
Looking ahead, my next goal is to continue getting stronger and fitter. Next year, I’m planning to challenge myself even further by signing up for a triathlon. It’s something I would never have imagined doing, but now I’m excited for it.
If I could give anyone who’s on the fence about starting at Function Fitness a piece of advice, I’d say: DO IT! You won’t regret it. It’ll be the best decision you make, not just for your fitness but for your mental health too."
