When ‘Healthy Eating’ Turns Into A Problem

We all want to be healthy. But what happens when trying to “eat well” starts making us feel worse?

If you've ever felt guilty for eating bread, anxious about going out for a meal, or proud you skipped the birthday cake — not because you didn’t want it, but because it didn’t feel “clean” — it might be time to take a step back.

Because here's the thing: healthy eating can become unhealthy.

We see it all the time. It starts with good intentions — cutting back on processed food, adding more veg, drinking more water. Great stuff.
But somewhere along the line, “healthy” morphs into perfect. And perfect is a trap.

Where it starts to go wrong

Clean eating sounds virtuous, but it can quickly turn into a set of rigid rules. Suddenly, food isn’t just fuel, it’s good or bad, clean or dirty.
And guess who ends up feeling like the “bad” one when you break the rules?

Food guilt becomes part of daily life. A biscuit isn’t just a biscuit — it’s a moral failure. You’re either “on track” or you’ve “fallen off.” No middle ground. No flexibility. Just stress.

Orthorexic tendencies- that’s the clinical term for becoming obsessed with eating “right” — don’t always look extreme. They sneak in quietly. Avoiding social events. Constantly checking food labels. Judging yourself for what you ate yesterday.

It’s not your fault. The wellness industry has made billions selling you the idea that clean = healthy = worthy.
But health isn’t about being pure. It’s about being well. And that includes your mental relationship with food.

What balanced actually looks like

You can eat nutritious food and enjoy dessert.
You can care about what you eat without obsessing.
You can aim to feel good in your body without punishing it.

Eating well should support your life — not control it.

This is what we work on together in nutrition coaching.
Not just what’s on your plate — but how it got there, how you feel about it, and whether it’s helping you feel energised, empowered, and well-fed.

Not sure where to start?

If this all sounds familiar — the rules, the guilt, the “good vs bad” thinking — maybe it’s time for a different approach.

Come and have a chat. No pressure. Just a conversation about what’s going on and how we can make things feel easier.

Book a free nutrition intro and let’s figure it out together.
