From Dad Bod to Skull Crushers Champion: Jack’s Journey at Function Fitness

When Jack joined Function Fitness in February 2024, he had one clear goal in mind: to be a fit and active dad for his young boys.

“I hate the phrase ‘I would die for my children’ it’s overused. But how many people would live for them? I wanted to be able to play without getting puffed out and still be here for them when they’re old. That’s why I joined.”

At first, like many new members, Jack found the sessions daunting. Everything felt unfamiliar, and he didn’t know anyone. But as he quickly discovered, the Function Fitness community was not only welcoming but it gave him exactly the motivation he needed.

“I’m really competitive, so those first few sessions just made me want to go more to improve my fitness as quickly as possible.”

Fast forward just over a year, and Jack has lost 10kg, built incredible strength, and completely changed his mindset around fitness.

Training With Purpose

Jack credits much of his success to the structured coaching and the Level Method system.

“I’m competitive, so constantly having that next level to aim for keeps me switched on. Anyone can rock up to a commercial gym, but with the right support, my achievements have accelerated so much faster than they would have on my own.”

Between personal training sessions and group classes, Jack’s progress has skyrocketed. The encouragement of training alongside others has pushed him to hit personal bests he never thought possible.

“I’m sure you get an extra 10% boost on PBs if you have a go in class."
Overcoming Setbacks

It hasn’t all been smooth sailing. Jack has hypermobility, which makes him more prone to injuries. But the Function Fitness coaches have adapted his training every step of the way.

“Poor Mike built a whole programme around running, and I damaged my knee on week one. He re-wrote the whole programme that same week, still focused on cardio but taking stress off my knee. Harry has had to adapt for me so many times with different injuries, but I never leave without feeling I’ve had a solid workout.”

This attention to detail has helped Jack build strength in previously injury-prone areas, reducing setbacks and giving him the confidence to push himself safely.

Huge Wins & Bigger Goals

Jack’s list of achievements over the past year is impressive:

  • Going from barely holding his chin above a bar to hitting 20kg weighted pull-ups for reps.

  • Smashing his weightlifting and cardio goals.

  • Competing in his first competition and captaining the winning team The Skull Crushers at the 2025 Intra House Games.

“Winning that with the team was awesome. Already looking forward to 2026!”

And he’s far from finished.

“When I first joined, I told Charlie I was coming for Black Level Method overall. Very overweight and sweaty at the time, so no doubt he thought I was joking but I was serious. I started at Yellow 2, I’m now overall Blue chasing down Purple… look out, Charlie!”
Why Jack Thinks You Should Join

Running his own business, Jack understands how hard it can be to prioritise health—but he’s made training part of his weekly routine.

“I book three days a week, every week, and it’s now second nature. I love it… not just the physical benefits, but the social side too. I’ve made loads of great friends, which is hard to do these days.”

And his advice to anyone thinking about joining?

“Go for it! You won’t regret it.”
