From Rehab to Real Strength: Hannah's Journey at Function Fitness
When Hannah first stepped into Function Fitness back in Autumn 2022, she was settling into a new area and looking to stay active. But what she didn’t expect was that a surfing accident would completely derail her fitness journey.
"I dislocated my knee surfing, which meant I needed surgery a year or so later. It was in Summer 2024, a few months after the op, when my progression back to normal activities was taking a while and I was still limping, that I reached out to the Function Fitnessteam to see if there was a chance returning to the gym was even possible at that point.”
Thankfully, the answer was yes.
Coach Steve welcomed Hannah back with one-to-one PT sessions, focusing on strengthening her legs and regaining mobility and flexibility. It wasn’t long before that careful approach led to real progress and confidence.
“Then after a few months of this, I took the leap back into group classes and haven’t looked back!”
From Rehab to Real Strength
Hannah’s initial goal was simple yet significant: recover from injury. But that goal quickly evolved.
“My goal moving forward is injury prevention by building overall strength and mobility. Progression in both these areas has been huge; in July 2024 I couldn’t even break parallel in a squat whereas now I am able to front squat over 40kg, and comfortably sit in the bottom of a squat again as my strength and flexibility has improved.”
That’s not just a physical transformation… it’s a mental one too.
After dealing with a separated shoulder (courtesy of her demanding work as a farm vet!), Hannah found herself once again adjusting. But thanks to Steve’s tailored PT sessions, her shoulder strength and mobility returned within weeks.
Still, the biggest hurdle hasn’t just been physical. She shared…
“The main challenge overall has been a mental one; after years of not feeling confident in my own body and not trusting it to not break if I pushed myself, the last year with Function Fitnessand Steve have slowly taught me that I am capable of trying harder workouts, trickier skills and heavier weights. The positive impact of overcoming the mental hurdle, now doing things I wasn’t even capable of years before the injury, has been the most rewarding thing.”
Milestones That Matter
Some of Hannah’s proudest moments might sound small to others—but to her, they were massive steps forward.
“A few personal highlights include my first ‘proper’ box jump onto a 20” box, after having to relearn how to step up onto a kerb only a few months before: Steve celebrated as much as I did with that one!”
And then there was the 5K parkrun.
“A goal had been to continually run 5km without stopping due to leg pain, which after training with Run ‘Rub’ Club and some newfound mental determination, I achieved. I continue to try and improve my running, whereby my limiting factor is fitness—not pain! This has felt like a ‘promotion’, as now during gym classes I join in with the running rather than changing to the rower or ski-erg adaptive activities.”
Eyes on the Next Level
Now that she’s gained momentum, Hannah’s not slowing down.
“I recently leveled up to an Orange from a Yellow, however during the assessment I managed a few Blues; this has made me quite determined to level up to a Blue in the next six months. I’ve been attempting the occasional Blue workout in class, and will be investing in a skipping rope to practice the elusive double-unders.”
Words for Anyone on the Fence
For those thinking about joining Function Fitness but feeling unsure, Hannah has just one thing to say:
“Absolutely 100% do it! The fundamental sessions seem intimidating but all the coaches are really great and they’re a brilliant opportunity to figure out what you are already capable of and find areas to improve in. Then in the classes theFunction Fitness members are all kind, supportive folk who always have a laugh and cheer everyone on.”
And above all, she credits her return to movement and motivation to the team that’s helped her every step of the way.
“A huge part of my progress at Function Fitness has been down to Coach Steve, who is absolutely brilliant. I frankly don't think I'd be back exercising (and enjoying it!) if it wasn't for his PT programmes and rehab. I think everyone at Function Fitness is really lucky to have a wonderful team of coaches to be trained by.”
