From the Court to the Barbell: Don’s Journey at Function Fitness

When Don joined Function Fitness four months ago, he wanted to stay fit during the tennis off-season and tackle some lingering aches from the court. Early mornings and sore muscles were a challenge, but before long, training became part of his routine, and he found himself genuinely enjoying weightlifting and testing his limits.

From First Steps to Big Gains

Don nearly signed up to a traditional gym, but instead he decided to join Function Fitness, and that’s when the real progress began.

“I realised there were parts of my fitness I’d completely ignored. Learning new skills and building strength properly was a game-changer.”

The first few weeks were tough. Early mornings and sore muscles made him question his life choices more than once, and there were moments where getting out of bed felt harder than the workout itself. But Don stuck with it, and gradually training became part of his routine.

By about three months in, Don was feeling stronger, moving better, and noticing real improvements. He added more cardio, tightened up his nutrition, and set himself some big goals.

Stronger on the Court

Don’s original goal was to lose weight, build strength, and reduce his risk of injury when playing tennis. Knee pain has disappeared, he’s faster around the court, and he can keep his intensity up throughout a match, which is always a nice bonus when the game gets competitive.

Wins That Make You Smile

Some of Don’s proudest moments haven’t been about numbers on a barbell, but about learning new skills. Getting the hang of the kip and linking multiple kipping leg raises together gave him a huge sense of achievement. Small wins, big grin.

Now he’s working towards handstand walks, muscle-ups, and continuing to improve his double-unders.

“Continuing to improve and learning new movements has been one of the best parts of my journey.”

Goals Ahead

Don’s focus now is all about progression. He wants to keep developing his gymnastic skills, improve his Olympic lifts, and continue getting stronger and more confident in what his body can do. One of his big goals is to lift his own bodyweight in the snatch and clean and jerk. Every session is another step forward, even the ones where his muscles loudly complain the next day.

“My aim is to keep challenging myself, enjoy the process, and see just how far I can go.”

Why Don Recommends Function Fitness

For Don, one of the biggest differences has been not having to figure everything out on his own. Having structure, coaching, and a group of people training alongside him has helped him stay consistent and focused.

“All you need to do is turn up and work.”

And as Don has discovered, just turning up regularly can take you much further than you ever expect.

Why We’re Celebrating Don

In just a few months, Don has made impressive progress. He’s stronger, more confident, and has thrown himself into new challenges with real determination and focus. Whether he’s nailing a new skill or pushing a heavier lift, he shows up ready to work and improve.

Don, you’ve worked hard, trusted the process, and stayed committed, even on the early mornings. We’re so proud of how far you’ve come already and can’t wait to see what you achieve next. 🧡
