From Pilates to Powerlifting: Sandie’s Journey at Function Fitness

When Sandie first walked through the doors of Function Fitness in July 2021, she was stepping into unfamiliar territory. A Pilates instructor by background, she had built strength in a different way, but she was looking for something more. As she approached a milestone birthday, she wanted to feel stronger in a new way—beyond Pilates strength. She also wanted to look and feel her best for a big celebration. Sandie admits,

“I had never done this type of exercise/training before and was very apprehensive when I turned up for my Fundamentals with Charlie.”
“After each 30-minute session I would go home and think, ‘Why am I doing this? I’ll never be able to do a whole hour. I must be mad!’”

Like many newcomers, Sandie faced doubts and self-imposed intimidation. Seeing others lifting heavier and moving faster made her question her own abilities. But over time, her mindset shifted.

“I soon realised no one else is interested in what you are doing as they are concentrating on their own fitness goals.”

Pushing Through Challenges & Stepping Outside the Comfort Zone

For Sandie, the biggest challenge wasn’t the weights—it was believing in herself. Her school days were marked by avoiding sports, preferring archery and being a goalie in hockey—activities that didn’t require running or sweating. She joked,

“I was always way too self-conscious to be running around as I was a bit chubby and didn’t want to bring attention to myself. And I didn’t like getting sweaty—which I still don’t like!”

Despite those hesitations, Sandie found herself stepping far beyond her comfort zone, especially when she joined the gym’s Intra-House Games.

“I was pushed way out of my ‘comfort zone’ when I took part in the first Intra-House Games and was joint Captain of Buns of Steele. We didn’t win, but it was such a thrill and SO much fun.”

Fast forward a year, and she found herself on Team AMRAP Ravers—this time, victorious.

“We won! Again, it was so much fun being part of the team. We all supported and encouraged each other to do our best. And we had fab costumes too!”

Strength, Friendship & Unbelievable Lifts

Recognising she wanted to refine her technique, Sandie started personal training sessions with Steve, alongside Alice Turner—a gym member she barely knew at the time.

“We have become great friends and partners in crime. We are a great support to each other!”

With Steve’s guidance (and a little trickery in not revealing the actual weight), Sandie hit a major milestone.

“I actually Deadlifted 102.5KG while aiming for 100KG just before Christmas. I was absolutely buzzing after that. And when you get that lift and it goes right…it’s exhilarating.”

Lately, her focus has been on upper body strength, a challenge she never expected to enjoy.

“I am amazed at what I can now push up into the air!”

Strength That Goes Beyond the Gym

Beyond the numbers on the barbell, Sandie’s strength training has had a profound impact on her daily life - especially as a grandmother of three.

“All the strength training and functional moves—squats and wall ball throwing, etc.—are making it so much easier to lift, carry, chase, and throw the grandchildren around.”

Function Fitness has become more than just a gym to Sandie—it’s a community.

“It’s not a polished, high-tech, all-shiny-equipment, floor-to-ceiling-mirrors type of gym. It’s a friendly, professional, rough-around-the-edges type of gym with super skilled coaches that all know your name and want to see you do well. You are not ‘just a member’—you matter to the gym. And this, it seems to me, is Function Fitness’ USP.”

Sandie’s Advice to Anyone Thinking About Joining
